Contento, a restaurant in East Harlem provides access to all.
When Mara Rudzinski, Yannick Benjamin, George Gallego, Lorenz Skeeter, Heidi Turzyn, and Oscar Lorenzzi set out to open Contento, they wanted to create a space that was inclusive and accessible to all.
In a diverse and fast-paced city like New York, it was important for the leaders of Contento to create a community where those in wheelchairs would not only feel welcomed. But would also fully enjoy the restaurant experience.
Everything at Contento was built to accommodate all guests. From the moment you enter the restaurant, the wider than usual doors give ample space and a smooth entry. The bar also has a lower counter for those on wheels to comfortably grab a drink. And enjoy a front-row seat while they wait for their cocktails and wine.
What to expect:
Contento, which means content or happy in Spanish, is all about a hospitable outing and gratitude for where they came from. Their ethos is all about showcasing their roots. A mix between Peruvian cuisine and a thing or two that Chef Oscar Lorenzzi has picked up with 20 years of experience in New York City.
Peruvian-born chef Lorenzzi and his team respect the ingredients that they use. And they hope to revitalize guests with their food, drinks, and community.
This is the type of place where you know the wine recommendations will be good. Their wine list covers Europe, Latin America, South Africa, Australia, Lebanon, and more. They also house local wines and bottles that are having a social impact on the industry.
Once you’ve settled in with your wine, it’s time for some food.
To start, we’re looking forward to trying the huevos diablos (deviled eggs) with aji amarillo and the shrimp escabeche. Other dishes that look promising include the salmon tiradito with avocado, creamy aji amarillo leche de tigre, plantain chips. As well as the duck liver mousse with chicha morada gelee served with purple corn focaccia. As far as the mains go, there are several dishes we’d share. Like the Nikkei kurobuta – pork katsu with spicy vinegar daikon slaw, and yuzu aioli. As well as the short ribs with udon noodles, spicy peanut sauce, and togarashi.
