When Nami Nori arrived to the West Village back in 2019, lovers of nigiris and temaki flocked to see the most beautiful sushi hand rolls. But this isn’t your average sushi restaurant. The focus is on Temaki, or open-style hand rolls were you can see each ingredient. The visual stimulation is definitely there. And now Nami Nori has a second location in Williamsburg.
The new minimalistic restaurant with white walls and light wood accents was created by business partners Taka Sakaeda, Jihan Lee and Lisa Limb. Their goal is to “respect traditional techniques”, source quality ingredients while remaining true to their creative selves.
This casual and sleek temaki bar is serving hand rolls by the piece. Ranging from $6 – $16 per hand roll. There’s something here for everyone. Your vegan friends will love this spot. And the menu is 100% gluten free.
Classic temakis include spicy tuna and grilled eel + cucumber or avocado. From the crunchy section, expect Nami Nori’s take on an avocado “toast” with beets and crispy carrots. As well as, the everything smoked salmon with tomato. If you’re look for something a bit more extravagant. Check out the Primo temakis. This is your space to add caviar for $12. Of course, there’s uni. And also a lobster tempura temaki served with a yuzu aioli & frisée.
If you feel overwhelmed with the options know that chef’s choice is always an option. They have two temaki sets. One is strictly vegan and comes with five temakis. Including the eggplant with red miso and gobo chips. The other version is the Signature set. Consider it your starter pack at Nami Nori. It includes coconut shrimp temaki prepared with green curry, lime, and cilantro. Both sets are $28 each. For some Japanese inspired snacks, we’d go for the furikake fries, spicy tuna crispy rice and Japanaese potato salad with ikura. Sake is what we will be drinking but they also have a short but nice wine selection.
