WHAT TO EXPECT


At PaperFish you’ll be greeted by an entranceway that looks like the Fushimi Inari-Taisha – the famous shrine in Kyoto. Hanging lanterns with Japanese symbols light the outdoor patio and pink sakura trees divide the interior. Bring your friend who’s trying to become an influencer here. From the food to the décor, PaperFish will transport you to Kyoto.

WHAT TO WEAR


This place is trendy AF, so your outfit should be too. Throw on a pair of chunky white sneakers and head over to PaperFish.

THE MENU


The drink menu is expansive and includes signature cocktails, martinis, beer, wine and bubbles. If you’re really trying to immerse yourself in the culture, there is an entire section dedicated to classic Japanese drinks like sake, ginjo, daiginjo and nigori.

The food menu has eight sections: zenzai (starters), raw bar, salads, hand rolls, classic maki, signature maki, signature nigiri and tokusen (meat, fish and rice dishes). Some of the dishes are traditionally Japanese, like the Ishiyaki del Mar (squid, octopus, shrimp and Japanese butter). Of course, they also have fan favorites as well like crispy rice and a spicy tuna roll.

While the menu is mainly seafood-focused, there are still plenty of meat options for the landlubbers and veggie options for the vegetarian/vegan.

WHAT TO ORDER


But first, cocktails. Order the wasabi martini, made with gin, ginger liqueur, wasabi, green tea and pineapple. The wasabi flavor was subtle, making for a refreshing drink with just a hint of heat. For an Instagram-able cocktail, the hanami champagne combines vodka, basil, strawberry, yuzu juice, agave and Prosecco. The champagne flute is decorated with pink flowers that match PaperFish’s décor.

 The aforementioned Ishiyaki del Mar blew us away. A mix of squid, octopus and shrimp bathed in Japanese butter, it’s light and refreshing. The presentation alone is a reason to order this, served on four seashells with a smaller, flaming shell in the center. They recommend holding it by the shell and eating it whole, oyster-style. Also in the zenzai section of the menu is crispy rice with your choice of either tuna or salmon on top.For the main course, the misuna and salmon furai signature maki rolls are standouts. If you can’t decide between getting a roll with tuna or salmon, the misuna roll says, “Porque no los dos?” With tuna and avocado on the inside and topped with salmon tataki, sweet miso and sesame seeds, it’s the best of both worlds. The salmon furai is made with salmon, avocado and cream cheese, with crispy panko surrounding the sticky rice and drizzled with eel sauce. The crispy panko gives the roll a nice crunch and also makes it very filling. Don’t forget to order a side of eel sauce and spicy mayo.

COVID-19 SAFETY MEASURES


All of the tables inside are six feet apart and the staff wears masks. There is also outdoor seating for those who feel more comfortable eating al fresco.
