WHAT TO EXPECT
Taqueria el Mexicano is a two-story Mexican restaurant at the East end of Calle Ocho. Upstairs is Los Altos del Mexicano, a Mexican speakeasy bar. The main dining area and takeout window are downstairs. Recently, they added a dining garden behind the colorfully painted building. The patio has large picnic tables underneath twinkling lights and panels to protect against the sun and rain. The space is open and airy with a fan for each table.
The menu includes guacamole, tacos, burritos, soups, tostadas, tortas, dessert, and even brunch! The general manager Dave Caplan, spent many years as a chef in California and brings a unique perspective to the menu and recipes (including vegan options).
WHAT TO ORDER
What to order: Start your meal with the Guacamole de la Casa, topped with tomatoes, cilantro, and onion. Enjoy your homemade chips with bottomless red and green salsa.
Our favorite appetizer was the Queso Fundido. This hot melted cheese with crumbled chorizo and green onions is served in a sizzling skillet with fresh tortillas on the side.
To get the full entree experience, we recommend the Tacos el Mexicano. This meal includes 3 tacos of your choice, plus rice and refried beans. We loved the Al Pastor, Cochinita Pibil, and Carne Asada tacos.
