Reporting back on what we’ve recently been eating in Miami.
If you keep up with our weekly round-up of Breaking at Breakfast, then you know that we haven’t necessarily been to all of those spots. However, they’re on our radar and that’s where we’d be eating and drinking if we were you. We told you we’d let you know more if we end up loving them. So here we are!

Wayku is the latest in a burst of new restaurant openings in Wywnood. Milan-born Chef Matteo Gritti cooked in Michelin Star restaurants throughout Italy and opened his first eatery in Buenos Aires at 23. Did we mention that he’s also a DJ? It doesn’t get more Miami than that, so benvenuto Griitti! It also means music and vibe are a priority at Wayku and you are guaranteed to be grooving in your seat.
On the night that we dined, it seemed as if almost everyone in the restaurant knew each other and at one point the guy eating next to us went from guest to DJ. The space is intimate with indoor and outdoor seating, and it’s definitely a bit of a scene so get dressed up.
Buenos Aires bartender and TV/radio personality Mona Gallosi developed Wayku’s innovative beverage menu. Our favorite cocktails were the Latin Lover, a strong and sweet aged-rum libation with pecan honey and Aztec chocolate bitters, and the citrusy Serpent King with London dry gin, celery extract and prosecco.
Gritti’s menu pays homage to South American culture, with bits of European and Asian inspiration offering a borderless dining experience. Start with the light Hamachi Tiradito – a vibrant dish with melon, yellow pepper and crispy onions in a yuzu sauce. If carbs are calling your name go for the Izza Fritta with creamy burrata, fragrant black truffle and micro basil or the Aycha Bao Bun with pork Milanesa, sweet cabbage and purple kale.
Want to get some love from the kitchen team? Order up the Sea Bass with brown quinoa tartare. The dish is hand-delivered by Wayku’s sous chef Hernan Ruiz who pours the color-changing rainbow sauce tableside. Meat and potatoes lovers will enjoy the Patagonia lamb with green crust, round Andean patatas and artichokes.
Hungries, you know we are avocado obsessed so save room for Wayku’s silky avocado cheesecake.

Eleventh Street Pizza

If you’re looking for New York-style pizza in Miami, make sure to try Eleventh Street Pizza.
David Foulquier and team have revamped their former Fooq’s space into a takeout-only pizza concept. In the kitchen is pie-maker Aquiles Bisogni from Salerno, a port city southeast of Naples, Italy. He previously worked at the original Joe’s Pizza on Carmine Street in New York’s West Village. That means years of experience in one of New York’s most reputable slice shops.
When trying a new pizzeria, we always like to start off with the classics. If you can nail a simple mozzarella and tomato pie, then we’re sticking around for the rest.
For your pizza party at home get the Spicy Caesar with local little gem lettuce, sourdough breadcrumbs and Calabrian chili caesar dressing. For the pies, we recommend the Carmine Pizza with organic tomatoes, mozzarella, oregano, Parmigiano and basil.
Eleventh Street Pizza also offers a weekly rotating pie that is on the funkier side. We had the Fooq’s Pie. If it’s available, we highly recommend it. This Middle Eastern-inspired pizza is topped with braised lamb, tahini garlic white sauce, caramelized onions, dill, and mint.
Additionally, you can also order square pies that can be purchased by the slice for $12. We had the Pepperoni with organic tomatoes, mozzarella, pepperoni, roasted red onion, Calabrian chili paste, local orange blossom honey on thick, pan-baked sourdough bread.

Neighborhood: North Bay Village
Into Puerto Rican food? BBQ? How about both? We recently visited El Balbiquiu (say it out loud with your best Latin accent) in North Bay Village and loved it.
This new strip mall restaurant pays tribute to Puerto Rican culture with Hector Lavoe stencil drawings and more. On the back wall of the restaurant, you will see a neon sign with the words, “You’re Smokin”.
Thank you El Balbiquiu for the piropo, we really needed the compliment. But you know what’s really smokin’, the food at El Balbiquiu.
Chef Omar Flores’ proteins are all smoked with Puerto Rican sazon. Definitely order the juicy ribs. They fall off the bone and are as suave as Ricky Martin. They also make their own seasoning, sauces and homemade pique (typical Puerto Rican hot sauce).
As far as sides go, get the arroz con con gandules which is a traditional Puerto Rican dish of rice and pigeon peas. The crispy chicharron is bomb and you’ll want your own. Get a bottled Aguila or Medalla beer and your meal is complete.

We can’t believe it took us this long to visit Captain Jim’s and now that we’ve been, you need to go too.
The informal and aquatic-themed restaurant/fish market has been around since 1996.
It’s always a good sign when loyal customers have been around for 30+ years and even sit in the same spot when they come in.
Stop by for lunch and get a taste of their daily and freshly caught fish, made to order. We recommend Dave’s Buffalo Shrimp with Gulf Coast shrimp, tossed in their homemade buffalo sauce, and crumbled blue cheese. Looking for something on the lighter side, go for the Blackened Hogfish Fillet with sauteed spinach. The Florida Lobster is also a must and beautifully presented on a lobster shell. Get it lightly breaded and deep-fried with pink sauce and your choice of side.

Lots of new Italian restaurants to add to your list. Make sure Luca Osteria is at the top.
You’ve probably heard of a neighborhood spot called Eating House in Coral Gables. Specifically about a famous carbonara pasta by Chef Giorgio Rapicavoli that so many in Miami love.
Tapping into his Italian background, Rapicavoli is at it again with his latest restaurant venture: Luca Osteria. Naturally, after that carbonara, an Italian restaurant was the move.
The menu is inventive and every ingredient has a purpose. Nothing is overlooked and even the simple Marinated Olives with wild oregano, orange and fennel pollen are a must to kick start the meal.
We’d share the rich Patate Fritte with potatoes, black truffle, egg yolk and a buttery Parmigiano fonduta. The Grilled Wild Mushroom should also be at the center of the table. These mushrooms are served with Bagna Cauda, a sauce from Piedmont with garlic, salted anchovies, and olive oil; and shaved bottarga di muggine or grey mullet roe. You might need two orders of the Mortadella Toast with pistachio and fig balsamic if you’re sharing with more than two friends.
As far as pasta goes, we loved the Pasta Amatriciana with 21-month aged prosciutto, semi dried tomato and pecorino cheese. If you’re looking for something that’s not pasta, get the Grilled Sea Scallops with that Bagna Cauda previously mentioned, grilled fennel and olives from the town of Castelvetrano in Sicily.
After a long day, you’ll need a cocktail (or two). Don’t skip the Portofino, a vodka martini with green olive vermouth and a drizzle of Sicilian olive oil.

PLANTA WEST PALM BEACH

When we are craving plant-based eats but still want to feel fancy, South of Fifth’s PLANTA is always at the top of the list. Luckily for Palm Beachers, the Toronto-based brand recently expanded its chic vegan concept to the newly renovated Rosemary Square (formerly CityPlace) in downtown West Palm.
Located in a ground floor space, the restaurant is awash in natural hues and gorgeous custom-designed wallpaper from Candice Kay that even finds its way into the bathrooms. Unlike its sister restaurant in South Beach, PLANTA West Palm offers outdoor dining that will be in high demand for brunch.
We started our meal with selections from the “sushi bar” including a colorful Rainbow Roll with ahi watermelon, slaw, avocado, smokey gochujang and peanuts, and the California Roll with hearts of palm, avocado, rich buttery macadamia nuts, toasted coconut, and jalapeño. Both maki rolls were layered with textures and flavors that left us wondering if we missed the fish at all.
Other memorable dishes included PLANTA’s addictive Cauliflower Tots with truffle almond parmesan, Udon Noodles in an earthy truffle mushroom sauce, and our favorite bite of the night, a lush Cheesecake with tart cherry compote.
PLANTA is open daily for lunch and dinner and weekends for brunch.
