REPORTING BACK ON WHAT WE’VE RECENTLY BEEN EATING IN MIAMI.

If you keep up with our weekly round-up of Breaking at Breakfast, then you know that we haven’t necessarily been to all of those spots. However, they’re on our radar and that’s where we’d be eating and drinking if we were you. We told you we’d let you know more if we end up loving them. So here we are!

What We Ate This Week will cover everything that’s new, newish or that we’ve recently tried.

MAREA 1939

Wow, just wow. Marea 1939 inside of The National Hotel is the modern Spanish restaurant that we’ve been dreaming of for far too long. 

Chef Sergio Chamizo will take you on a culinary journey focused on the coastal flavors of Spain. His menu includes classic tapas, vegetable-forward dishes, a rice section and more. 

You’ll want to start your meal with a bottle from their biodynamic wine list–which we must note is a pleasant and rare find in a Miami Beach hotel. We went for the Tete Rose from Loire, France. 

As far as food goes, you’re getting a little bit of everything and sharing. Our favorite tapas include the Pan con Tomate with Cantabrian anchovies, Patatas Bravas, and Iberico Ham Croquetas.

 If you’re looking for some refreshing flavors to balance your meal, get the Heirloom Tomatoes with confit piquillo peppers, green onions, olives and anchovies. 

You can’t leave without trying the Marcona Almonds Ajo Blanco Gazpacho. This classic cold soup originating from Andalusia takes an inventive approach with white garlic, pickled grapes and salmon roe. You’ve never seen or tasted a gazpacho like this.

Another favorite was the Scallops Crudo with togarashi (a Japanese spice mix), thinly sliced apple, salmon roe and lime zest. The Spanish Octopus was cooked to perfection and presented traditionally with a potato cream, smoked paprika and finished off with Arbequina olive oil. The Carabinero Shrimp also needs to be on your list. They are simply cooked with garlic and parsley. Make sure to suck the prawn heads good for maximum flavor.

From their meat section, we recommend the Roasted Bone Marrow with caramelized onions and oxtail marmalade. 

Off the menu, they have a white chocolate dessert with fennel and cucumber that will blow your mind.

SHELTER

Neighborhood: Wynwood

Shelter is a new wood-fired restaurant from Brooklyn serving pizzas, baked empanadas & more in Wynwood. For some reason, we felt transported to a chic yet cozy Colorado lodge. Think wooden chandeliers, a deer head and mountain photographs hanging from the wall.

We envision you celebrating your birthday here with friends. Start off with some cocktails such as the Rockstar with mezcal, passion fruit, vanilla syrup, ginger beer or the Lemon Fizz with infused vodka and lemongrass.

For your pizza party we recommend you go with the MargheritaQuattro Stagioni (mushrooms, artichokes, olives, mozzarella and prosciutto cotto) and Burrata & Prosciutto. If you’re contemplating the empanada section of the menu, we’d go for the Humita with sweet corn and the Mushroom, Goat Cheese & Kale. Shelter also offers an Octopus Hot Dog, Entraña Asada and more Argentinan grilled dishes.

STRAWBERRY MOON

The aesthetic of Dave Grutman’s and Pharrell Williams’s newest restaurant, Strawberry Moon inside of The Goodtime Hotel was exactly what we imagined it would be. Flamingo pink and mint green are the colors used throughout the restaurant. It’s a real-life dream and Wes Anderson was def their muse. We’d come here to have a fabulous mezze lunch where people-watching is guaranteed and equally amusing with a drink in hand, of course. For the first round, go with the signature Purple Reign with tequila, ginger liqueur, shōchū, butterfly pea lavender and yuzu. Kick it to the next level by ordering the Spicy JaJa Margarita with mezcal, tequila, mango liqueur, passion fruit liqueur, lime and habanero.

As mentioned before in Breaking at Breakfast, the Mediterranean menu was created by Executive Chef Ian Fleischmann and Executive Corporate Chef Roel Alcudia, whose food you must know from his days at Mandolin Aegean Bistro.

Our favorite dishes included the Spicy Feta (with Calabrian chili and pepperoncini), Moon Bread (a traditional Yemenite bread with fig tahini butter), Yellowtail Crudo (with tomato vinaigrette, olives and serrano chili),  Beet and Watermelon Salad (mint, pistachio and tahini yogurt) and the Sheftalia (a lamb and pork sausage with sumac onion, garlic yogurt and lavash).

Zitz Sum

In 2020, Pablo Zitzmann brought Miami hand-rolled dumplings via his dim sum delivery service. It was a pandemic success, to say the least, which inspired the spin-off of his year-long pop-up concept, Zitz Sum that opened up its doors in May 2021.  

Through a hidden-ish entrance inside of a buttoned-up office building lobby in Coral Gables, you will find a Dim Sum & Izakaya concept, inspired by Japanese and Chinese street foods with a Miami twist.

The menu reads inventive with Chef’s Pablo magical touch in dishes like the Har Gow with pink shrimp, lemongrass and makrut lime, and tomatillo sauce. The magic number is four. Four guests to help you devour the entire menu. 

Please don’t miss the “Wonton In Brodo” with pork dumplings, charred leek, chives and onion broth; Chicken Pot Stickers with salsa macha, herbs and spicy Szechwan as well as the Crudo — local snapper, strawberries, avocado, and tosazu. The Charred Cabbage with habanero butter, aged parmesan, and dry miso; and the simple yet flavorful Cucumber and Snap Pea Salad with a miso carrot dressing, poppy seeds and labneh will change your life. And you can’t leave without trying the Yukhoe Ssam Bap —Korean steak tartare, egg salad, rice, and nori.

Although we don’t know what the future will hold for Miami’s dining scene, we’re pretty sure that this meal will remain one of our favorites in 2021.

TOTEM

Housed in the former Jimmy’z Kitchen, Totem is a casual neighborhood spot from husband-and-wife team Edgar Leal and Mariana Monter. Venezuelan chef Leal has a long history in the business, working with everyone from New York restaurateur David Bouley to Spain’s Ferran Adria. His intriguing cuisine at Totem is a mix of Latin fare with a Miami twist, and some Hungries (or your parents) may know him from his award-winning Coral Gables restaurant, Cacao, which was a hot spot in the early 2000s.

Totem is super comfortable and fairly relaxed with ample outdoor seating that’s properly spaced and an intimate dining room. We dined on the early side when it was fairly quiet but later in the evening, the atmosphere kicks up with a DJ, hookah service, and skull margaritas.

Kick off the meal with one of their smoking cocktails like the Totem Paloma with mezcal, cherry, lime, and grape juice smoked tableside, but finish your night with the Choco Fashion. The spirit-forward libation with Bullet bourbon, orange, angostura, and cocoa bitters, and a chocolate square is an ideal after-dinner drink. The team is also working on several new mango cocktails as we come into season for South Florida’s favorite homegrown fruit.

We love playing with our food, so definitely order the Chromatic Arepas – a sampler of five corn, beet, calamari ink, aji Amarillo, and chicharron arepas. They’re served with fillings of chicken salad, fried queso fresco, and shredded beef that you can mix and max, so load, stack, eat and repeat.

We all know octopus can be hit or miss, but Totem’s generous serving was tender and flavorful, served simply with paprika, roasted potatoes, and Peruvian botija olives.

Our favorite plate was an interesting Peruvian/Mexican-inspired Black Tamale fully loaded with a blend of shrimp, calamari, and crab and topped with a canary yellow aji Amarillo sauce.

On a date that needs a little levity? Order the Franceschi Totem and be ready to bust out your best sexual innuendos as your server drizzles the phallic chocolate mousse-filled obelisk with melted chocolate. It’s delicious but don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Totem is open daily from 11 am-midnight.
