Reporting back on what we’ve recently been eating.

If you keep up with our weekly round-up of Breaking at Breakfast, then you know that we haven’t necessarily been to all of those spots. However, they’re on our radar and that’s where we’d be eating and drinking if we were you. We told you we’d let you know more if we end up loving them. So here we are!

What We Ate This Week will cover everything that’s new, newish or that we’ve recently tried.

NEW: Navé

Neighborhood: Coconut Grove

During the pandemic, we saw one of our favorite seafood restaurants close temporarily. Chef Michael Beltran and Justin Flit have re-opened Navé with a new menu and you have to try it. Located in Coconut Grove, Navé shares an awesome outdoor patio with sister restaurant Ariete. It’s breezy and it will work for a fancy or a laid-back dinner. We recommend going with a group of four so you can try a little bit of everything.

From the raw bar, we’d get the scallop crudo with ajoblanco, grapes and Marcona almonds. The steak tartare was presented non-traditionally on a thick toast with a chilled au jus complimenting the flavors of the steak. Don’t skip the broiled Miami clams with medianoche butter and melted gruyere cheese.

Don’t leave Navé without getting one of Chef Justin’s pasta dishes. We went for the rigatoni bolognese with veal, beef and pork. We’ll be back for the spaghetti with crab, saffron and tomato. All the pasta is hand-made in Navé’s temperature-controlled, glass-enclosed pasta room.

It had been too long since we had a whole fish this good. When we went it was a snapper. Get the whole fish. We added a side of the potato pave.

Nave is open on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 5 PM – 10 PM; Friday and Saturday until 11 PM. They are launching their brunch menu on February 28th so you know we’ll be back. They also have a happy hour menu from 5 PM – 7 PM that includes gnocco fritto, a smoked fish dip and those Miami clams we were just raving about.

NEW: Ruby Dee’s


Address: 140 NE 39th St
Neighborhood: Design District

Ruby Dee’s is a relatively new concept inside of the MIA Market food hall. If you’re turned off by food halls, you need to get that out of your head. Ruby Dee is actually a fine dining restaurant (that happens to be in a casual food hall) and you’ll be so impressed by the level of technique, dish after dish.

Chef Daniel Roy is behind Ruby Dee’s, he’s worked for some of Miami’s most talented chefs that include Jermey Ford and Jose Mendin. His food is not constrained by any particular cuisine. His flavors are global, bold and thought out.

You’ll want to spend the day at Ruby Dee’s pacing yourself, trying the entire menu.

From the raw bar, you’re getting the Kusshi oysters with a ginger mint mignonette, paprika oil and cilantro and the salt-cured Hamachi tartar with soy ginger shiitake dressing, avocado mousse, radish and crispy quinoa. The Turkey Sandwich has no shortcuts. They brind, cook and slice the turkey. It also comes with a herb grapeseed aioli, basil, parsley, chives, hydroponic arugula from Davie, heirloom tomatoes, Swiss cheese and bacon. It’s honestly one of the best turkey sandwiches we’ve ever had and yes we’ll be adding it to this list.

Our favorite was the charred maitake mushrooms, served with a truffle yuzu emulsion, 24-month Parmesano, chives and lemon zest for the right amount of acidity. The cauliflower dish is also a must. They fold a feta and goat cheese blend into a house-made Harissa sauce and finish it off with pepitas, garlic crumb, mint and parsley.

Mister 01

If you like your pizza crispy and thin, then you have to try Mister01. We recently ordered it for delivery and are happy to report that the pizza traveled really well. Our favorite so far is the Claudio. It comes with tomato sauce, mozzarella, fresh burrata, truffle oil, basil and stracciatella cheese on the side when you order it for takeout. We also enjoyed the Fabio with tomato sauce, mozzarella, gorgonzola bleu cheese, speck, and white truffle oil.

Next time around we’ll be trying the Coffee Paolo with tomato sauce, mozzarella, gorgonzola bleu cheese, honey, coffee, and spicy salami.

They also recently opened a new location in Coconut Grove’s Cocowalk with outdoor seating.

Zitz Sum x Tran An


Lunar New Year Collaboration at Tran An

To celebrate the Lunar New Year, Zitz Sum, an Asian-inspired pop up collaborated with Tran An, a Vietnamese restaurant in Little River for a special weekend menu. We know bringing up this one night only menu is cruel since you won’t be able to get it for the foreseeable future (Here’s hoping that Tran An and Zitz Sum get together again) but you can still get delicious Vietnamese food at Tran An and order delivery from Zitz Sum.

If you’re going to Tran An, we recommend the Vegan Spring Rolls, the Pork & Shrimp Saigon Crepe, the OG Classic Banh Mi with Vietnamese Pork and the Hanoian Pork Noodles with Crispy Rolls. For more info click HERE.

Jeepney

We recently checked out 1-800-Lucky, Miami’s Asian food hall in Wynwood specifically to try Jeepney, their newest vendor. Jeepney is a New York restaurant that recently moved down to Miami to serve Filipino menu.

Filipino cuisine draws influence from Spain, China, Malaysia and India. The flavors are bold and have depth. Our favorite dish was the Sisig which is a crunchy pork belly cooked in an iron skillet with an egg and garlic rice served on the side.

Square Pie City

Looking for Detroit-style pizza in Miami isn’t an easy task. We’ve got a spot that pop-ups in two different locations. On Friday, you can catch Square Pie City at Babe’s Meat & Counter in Palmetto Bay and on Saturday at Boxelder Craft Beer Market. Each pizza comes with 6 hefty square pieces. If you go for the red sauce pies, know that they go light on the tomato sauce (which we’re into). Our favorite was the “It’s That All White Err’ythang Pie” with housemade ricotta, roasted garlic sauce, Sicilian oregano, provolone, mozzarella, and parmesan. Next time, we’ll be getting the “Many Magical Mushrooms Pie” with Asiago cheese, provolone, and mozzarella that was sold out. To order click HERE

Uchi

Owner and Executive Chef, Tyson Cole has brought his Austin-based restaurant Uchi to Miami. Uchi Miami is located in Wynwood. It has a beautiful sleek interior with sandy and wooden tones. The restaurant also has a small outdoor patio.

Here you will find Chef Cole’s non-traditional approach to Japanese cuisine with an extensive menu offering sushi, sashimi, as well as makimono (rolled sushi), agemono (deep-fried) and other Japanese dishes. Our favorite dish was the Cauliflower with curried raisins, gruyere foam, and cashews. We also enjoyed the Miyagi Oysters from the Pacific (with lemongrass, coconut, finger lime), the Hama Chili (that comes with yellowtail, ponzu, Thai chili and orange), Masu pom (ocean trout pomegranate and gooseberry), Akami (tuna loin sashimi with tamari and pickled wasabi) and Tako (octopus, smoked coconut, and green curry chimichurri).
